Sport

St Aidan’s engage in a broad range of physical activities. Below is a list of some of the activities the children have been involved in in the past year.
The children take part in the Athletics Festival in Sligo in early October each year. The competition is run by Youth Sport West and takes place on the professional track in the Institution of Technology Sligo.
GAA
The children are registered with Cuman na mBunscol each year and take part in a tournament of Gaelic matches against other schools of similar size. The children receive Gaelic skills training from March to May, and the competition is run from May through to June, with the finals taking place in Markievicz Park, Sligo towards the end of June. We are fortunate to have a lovely pitch with proper goals for the children to practice their football skills.
Sports Day
This is usually held on the last week of June before the school closes for summer holidays. Sports day last year was run by senior coaches from Sligo GAA and we are hoping to engage with the same coaches this year. All equipment was provided by the GAA for the day and parents were welcome to attend and watch the fun sporting events.
The PA provided refreshments on the day for anyone attending and there was a surprise visit from the Ice-cream van at lunch time, this was courtesy of the Parents Association.
Yoga/Pilates
The children had a six week coaching in Yoga and Pilates.
Cycling Safely
The pupils were taught how to cycle safely in school.
Mindfulness Meditation
The children practice meditation each week in school.
5-Aside Soccer
The children recently took part in a 5-aside soccer competition in the Showgrounds in Sligo. This competition is run by John Russell and the FAI.
Dodge-Ball Tournament
The children in the senior room take part in a Dodge-Ball tournament each year in November. This tournament is run by Grange Secondary school. Our school won the Dodge-Ball cup this year. It was a great day for our school and there was great celebrations when the cup was returned to our school with the school name engraved on it.
Tag Rugby
The children received coaching in Tag-Rugby for a period of six weeks this was in conjunction with Youth Sport west, Sligo.
Chess Club
The children in the senior room take part in various chess competitions throughout the year, competing with other schools. We recently competed against the children in St Clare’s NS Manorhamilton. The children also enter the Community games Chess competition each year and we had 5 winners at the local Community games finals.
Table-Tennis
We recently set up a new table tennis club in our school, which typically operates on rainy days when we need to stay indoors due to the weather.
Basketball
The children receive basketball tuition during September, and we are fortunate to have a basket-ball court in our school playground.
These are just some of the activities the children have taken part in this year.
Martial Arts
Pupils at St. Aidans were fortunate enough to have a Martial Arts session at school.
